INTRODUCTION

The Honda Brio is a pint sized / entry level car suited to congested traffic conditions. It is the manufacturer’s first city car for the South African market and there is only one model available – the Comfort, which is available with either a manual or automatic transmission. The Brio is a combination of funky styling, zippy dynamics, clever use of interior space and fuel efficiency – everything needed to get from point A to point B.

EXTERIOR

At a glance, you might be forgiven for mistaking the front of the Brio for that of the current Jazz, although if you look long enough, you’ll notice that the Brio boasts protruding fenders, large cylinder-design headlights and that the front intake features add to the Brio’s bright, youthful expression, whilst simultaneously creating an element of the Brio being a car with a wide stance.

The Honda Brio has its own unique styling and individuality which is most noticeable in its rear. Its such a tiny car that it won’t take you long to scoot around to the rather abruptly ending rear, where you will notice that the rear is dominated by a glass hatch which features combination lamps that extend to the edge to the edge of the vehicle. This clever design trick further emphasizing the car’s wide stance, and enhances the low-slung brake lamp arrangement. The large, round red lenses of the tail lights placed at the edges of the body also add to this effect.

INTERIOR

The delightful interior is compact and modern, with touches of chrome giving a perception that it is more up market than the segment it is in. It’s finish in three-colours; the dashboard is black and dark brown and the upholstery is disappointing beige, (disappointing because it gets dirty and stained very quickly), which ironically distinguishes it from its competitors. It features an air conditioning system, a radio/CD player and electric windows and although the driver’s window can be opened with a one-touch feature, it does not work when closing the window.

The seats have high backrests and the head restraints are fitted into the seat for safety reasons, however, this could be a problem should you wish to fit seat covers to protect the upholstery.

There are a few disappointments within the Brio though; one being that it does not have a rear window wiper which could be a serious safety risk, although it is fitted with a demister. Another downside is that its rear seat folds down as one unit making versatility all but impossible whist another yet, is that the steering column only offers height adjustment, which makes finding the right driving position a bit difficult.

SPACE & CREATURE COMFORTS

The little Honda Brio is surprisingly spacious and has a number of storage cabins including three cup and two bottle holders. The only real problem I found was that the slither of a boot couldn’t take much luggage, without folding down the rear back seats which also presents a problem in that it limits the number of occupants in the car.

That said, the Brio is well equipped with features such as an MP3-compatible audio system with USB and AUX inputs and steering wheel-mounted audio controls, air conditioning and electric windows among the standard fitment items; and when it comes to standard safety features, the Brio comes equipped with dual front airbags and ABS with EBD.

SAFETY & SECURITY

There are a number of safety and security features within the Honda Brio including front pre-tensioning restraint seatbelts (have an automatic pre-tensioning system that ride across the lap and chest to help restrain the driver and passengers during sudden stops). Other features include:

ABS brakes with EBD

Electric Power Steering (EPS) with speed sensitivity

THE DRIVE

The 1,2-litre i-VTEC engine within the Brio is spirited and offers an easy and comfortable drive. On urban roads the Brio keeps up effortlessly with flowing city traffic and provided you keep the revs up, the Brio will climb steep inclines smoothly. The steering is light and perfect for tackling the twists and turns of the urban jungle and the Brio weaves in-between cars and around corners as if it was built precisely for that purpose.

INTRODUCTION

Once in a while, a manufacturer produces a vehicle which makes you shake your head and smile endearingly; a car that easily maneuvers in and out of traffic as if you were on a bicycle and all the while makes you feel and look good too isn’t something you encounter daily. Yet that is exactly what Fiat have done with the 500 cabriolet – their revered retro-inspired super-mini which comes standard with a fun but chic element which very few other cars can ever hope to match. It is racy, comfortable, technological and environmentally-friendly and is in my view a quintessential accessory for any fashion forward motorist. Similar to an irresistible pair of heels, the Fiat 500c is a motoring must-have set of wheels!

EXTERIOR

The Fiat 500c is a fresh design offering based on the original 1950s model and incorporating lines and panels which are in keeping with today’s modern vehicle yet true to the original version. Ordinarily I would start by describing a car’s exterior by mentioning it’s grille and headlight, but in this instance, the view that best characterizes the unique style of the 500c is the rear view where the clear division of the soft canvas top from the car’s steel body is emphasized by a chrome trim which I later learnt used to be in the versions created from 1957.

The soft top, available in three colours, is a designer masterpiece; opening with just a touch of a button which triggers the top to drop automatically till the spoiler level. By further pressing the button once more, the top can drop even further and revealing a rather sexy silhouette – of the driver as well a the car! The side view is made more interesting with the inclusion of the Fiat 500c logo.

The front end of the Fiat 500c is distinctive yet elegantly simplistic and unfussy and it is refreshing to see a not-over-the-top kind of design in an iconic vehicle such as this. Just the bug-like headlights, front fog and daytime running lights adorn the Fiat logo which is embedded in a single chrome strip set between the headlights. And then there is the bling, or in motoring terminology – chrome, the Fiat 500c includes a chrome kit comprising of side window weather strips with chrome plated insert, chrome-plated tailpipe, chrome plated inserts on front and rear bumpers, and a chrome gear stick crown.

It’s almost as if the designers of the Fiat 500c deliberately created a toned-down styled car, so as to allow the driver to take all the shine, and certainly, South Africans will fall heels over bumper for the Fiat’s 500c and possibly change their perceptions about the Fiat brand whilst at it.

INTERIOR

Fiat has taken care to maintain an unpretentious interior design by carrying through the retro 50s-meets-contemporary look making ample use of modern day finishes for an overall effortlessly stylish and hip feel.
The circular speedometer, rev counter and dashboard finish are the same colour as the exterior and the raised leather gearlever cover and buttons for the air-con and radio make for excellent ergonomics.

The passenger compartment is rather spacious given the size of the 500c and the front-seat spacing is sufficient for even a tall-ish driver and passenger and even the small rear seats will comfortably accommodate a couple of adults albeit for only a short journey.

SPACE & CREATURE COMFORTS

I’d image there was a bit of a discussion about where to focus the most space within the Fiat 500c the choices being passenger cabin or luggage compartment and clearly the winning vote went to the passengers.

The luggage space is sufficient for a few groceries bags; its not that you’d be doing a monthly grocery run for a family of five in this car, rather the space within allows for weekly supermarket stock ups although more can be fitted once the rear seats have been folded down (50/50 rear seat split). To be fiat though, the amount of luggage space is in keeping with the Fiat 500c’s diminutive standing and one cannot expect more than what you get.

The lid of the luggage door opens from the bottom up and doesn’t protrude from the shape of its outline, meaning there is no need to step away when loading luggage. And if the soft top is down, an electronic device lifts it a few centimetres higher to allow the boot to open fully.

Technology features which come as standard equipment within the Fiat 500c include:

Radio/CD/Mp3 player, 4 speakers and 2 tweeters

Hands free technology

Heat-reflecting windows

Height adjustable steering wheel

THE DRIVE

The character filled Fiat 500 cabriolet is as delightful to drive as it is to look at. With a flick of the ignition and the engine gives a confidently fierce rev easily reminiscent of a cute but slightly annoyed kitten.
Given its size, it comes as no surprise that it is a fantastic city car, and without a doubt its best feature is maneuverability – in and out of traffic thanks also to its light steering. It grips the road sturdily and its small proportions mean that the Fiat 500c feels stable on the road although there is some body roll within it. There is also a fair amount of wind and road noise which is most notable on straights such as the highway, but not so irritating that it would be a purchase deal-breaker.

INTRODUCTION

Following the launch of the Suzuki Swift GLS models in 2011, Suzuki has extended its model range to include the aggressive looking Suzuki Swift Sport. In truth, I’m not usually moved by small cars – in fact I am a little fearful of being in them; and whilst I have driven many B segment cars, I have always approached them with some measure of trepidation. But, every once in a while a little pocket rocket – such as the Suzuki Swift Sport – screams its way onto my radar, making me want to drive it as though I’m auditioning for the lead role in the Fast and Furious series!

The best way I can describe the Swift Sport is to liken it to a comfy, safe go-kart for grown ups because of its cheeky, hot-hatch looks and racer-like driving experience. I enjoyed having it on test so much, that I managed to wrangle an additional 4 days in it from Suzuki SA!

EXTERIOR

Amazingly, the creatives at Suzuki have managed to design a racy little number which neither looks exclusively boy racer nor fragile and feminine. Easily distinguishable from the standard Swift by its lowered stance and sportier appearance, distinctive fins on the prominent foglight bezels immediately declare the Swift Sport’s aggressive edge and dynamic performance.

From its bold sports front grille to its flowing roofline with rooftop spoiler, colour coded door handles & mirrors, Halogen multi-reflector headlights (HID), tinted windows, 16” multi-spoked alloy rims with 16″ tyres the Swift Sport is nearly impossible to miss on the roads, unless you’re blind!

Those driving behind it will be treated to the sight of the Swift Sport’s twin tail pipes and that oh so wicked looking diffuser! Simply put, the Suzuki Swift Sport screams “drive me” and I was compelled to oblige! (See The Drive).

INTERIOR

Inside the cabin, the Swift Sport is generously roomy and is more spacious than its compact exterior might otherwise suggest. The front passenger and driver enjoy bucket seat comfort whilst the driver’s seat cushions with extra support from the seat’s deep bolsters and side support pipes hidden within it. Both seats have the “Sport” logo embroidered on them in racing red entrenching the sport car feel even more.

The telescopic-adjustable three-spoke leather steering wheel is a pleasure to grip. Encased in soft leather with ideally positioned finger rests for added comfort, it has built in audio functions on it for increased driver safety. The red cross-stitching on its rim and a silver-coloured accent on the bottom spoke remind you that the Suzuki Swift has evolved from functional standard model to a more free spirited and sporty drive.

The plastics used on the dash and trimmings are pretty darn good for a car of this price bracket. The chronograph-style meter cluster houses five sporty, easy-to-read meters, encircled in thick metallic rings keep you informed as you drive.

And to further emphasize its sporty nature, the Suzuki Swift Sport has stainless steel pedal plates. (Always drive in rubber-soled footwear, particularly when steel pedals are involved. Anything else might result in your foot slipping off the pedal, causing a dangerous driving situation).

SPACE

The Suzuki Sport is simply spacious with enough leg and head room for 4 adults (it is positioned as a 5 seater vehicle). Strangely there is only 1 cup-holder in the front of the cabin but two in the rear yet 2 bottle holders in the front and rear – I guess if it can hold a bottle it can hold a cup so that’s not a train-smash.

THE DRIVE / WHAT'S UNDER THE HOOD

I don’t normally get too hot and heavy about the technical details of any car, but for the Swift Sport, I must make a small exception. One would think that in a car this size and with that much power (in relation to its size) might not be stable, leaving occupants somewhat queasy due to body roll. Not the case, in fact far from it!

The Swift Sport features an exclusively designed rear suspension which assures comfort and stability when cornering, driving at high speeds or even driving in severe driving conditions. (See Safety). Generally
speaking racing suspension systems are hard and easily make day-to-day driving uncomfortable. But once again the Suzuki design genies have waved their magic wand and found a balance between comfort and sportiness; so whilst you are essentially in racer-chick mode daily, your toosh won’t even know it!

Something else worth mentioning is that Suzuki have retained a naturally aspirated motor within the Swift Sport, which is something to admire given that we live in a world of steroid-driven cars a.k.a. turbo boosters. But I’m not complaining.

Also surprising, is that the Swift Sport is remarkably light on fuel and although the manufacturer pegged consumption at a ridiculously low 6.5L/100km I didn’t get above 5.8 the entire time I had it and trust me, I drove that Swift Sport like I’d stolen it – whenever I could!

SUMMARY

The Suzuki Swift Sport is proof that you can get the whole “vehicular enchilada” for less than both your arms, legs and those of a cherished relative. It offers comfort, sporty good looks, race-car driver feel, gazillions of features and excellent fuel consumption (petrol attendants won’t know you by name).

For a steal at R213 900 anyone shopping for a car might be hard pressed to find a match for the Swift Sport without digging deeper into the pocket.
What most car buyers don’t seem to understand is that one does not have to drive a “brand name” car, because there are options such as the Suzuki Swift Sport which seem to be erroneously overlooked.

While it boggles my mind why anyone would want to buy anything else, I am inclined to wonder if maybe, just maybe Suzuki SA hasn’t put as much marketing oomph behind the Swift Sport as it deserves

The WesBank SAGMJ Car Of The Year is South Africa’s most coveted accolade in the motor industry with a complex judging process by respected professionals. Sponsored for the past 28 years by WesBank, in association with Total and Hollard Insurance it is unique in that three rounds of voting determine the ultimate winner.

The first round of voting is open to all full members of the SAGMJ and yields the semi-finalists, where after a second round of voting, open to only the jury, determines the finalists. There were 27 semi-finalists, and the entries have now been whittled down to 12 finalists.

The testing is done at Gerotek, an internationally acclaimed facility which allows the vehicles to be evaluated under the conditions individual vehicles would be expected to perform under in everyday / ordinary driving scenarios, with routes designed to test the vehicles in a similar way the average consumer would use them. The test days offer the Jury the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the vehicles and specific aspects such as aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money.

The winning car reflects value for money, safety, dynamics, technology, aesthetics, innovation and ingenuity, and evokes automotive passion and excitement.

While all of the models are deemed to represent examples of outstanding automotive engineering, there can be only one winner and, in the eyes of the COTY Jury, that model will epitomize all-round automotive excellence. The winner of the 2013 WesBank / SAGMJ Car the Year will be revealed at a gala banquet on 6th March 2013

The twelve finalists for the 2013 WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year competition, South Africa’s premier motoring event, are (in alphabetical order):

2012 BMW 3 Series 320i Automatic

All engines can be combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Issued on behalf of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists.

Following the two-day test sessions at Gerotek, a final allocation of points by the jury is tallied and audited before an overall winner is announced.

The next step in the process is to determine the winner from a two-day test session to be held in February 2013 at the Gerotek test facility near Pretoria, where the Jury members will assess the cars independently.

South Africa’s Car of the Year competition

A significant change to this year’s competition is the manner in which the COTY Jury was determined. Following a Car of the Year workshop held earlier this year, the Jury is no longer compiled from those SAGMJ members who had the greatest exposure to the eligible model ranges (by means of launch events and test cars). Instead, after casting a vote in the first round, each member had the opportunity to vote for 25 of his or her peers to serve on the Jury. The members with the most votes – to a maximum of 30 members – were co-opted onto the COTY Jury.

.

The announcement of the COTY finalists follows a vote cast by a 29-member jury, elected by their peers, on the 27 Semi-finalists.

How it works – The Judging Process

The full working membership of the Guild are supplied with a list of eligible models (in categories / market segmentations) provided by the Validation Committee and are invited to vote for models which they believe should be considered by the Guild’s COTY Jury for nomination. Each full member is given a specific number of “votes” with which they indicate which models they believe should go forward for consideration for nomination by the Jury.

The Validation Committee, where necessary, calls upon manufacturers / importers / distributors for suitably verified numbers of vehicles made and sold or intended to be sold if required.

The manufacturers / distributors / importers may inform the SAGMJ in writing of any particular models they do not wish to have considered in the competition. Such notice must be fully motivated, and this information is taken forward to the Validation Committee. These submissions must be received at the SAMGJ office before the closing date.

The members of the Validation Committee (who have been selected for their expert knowledge of the South African passenger market and road testing) convene to address the input from the manufacturers, other sources and the votes from the full working membership to produce a list for final consideration by the Jury members.

At the Jury Meeting the Jury are presented with the full list of the finalists and the votes these vehicles received when voted upon by the Jury, and a decision is then taken as to how many of the finalists make the final testing days based purely on the number of votes received during this process. The only discussion and debate is around at which point in the list provided the cutoff for the entry into the finals takes place.

The announcement of the finalists takes place at a special function.

During the Test Days, Guild Evaluators, who must be Jury Members, carry out a series of dynamic and static assessments to each of the nominated models.

Static and dynamic evaluation takes place over the test period. The evaluation takes place within a controlled test environment and is geared towards testing all facets of the driving experience relevant to the particular vehicle and the competition in order to determine a winner.

To assist in the evaluation processes, Evaluators are provided with comparative information charts drawn from the entry forms, information supplied by the participants and by the Guild. A basket of parts comparative prices list is also made available.

The Car Of The Year is selected by the collective assessment of the Guild Evaluators as reflected in the combined number of points scored during this process.

A Jury member is allocated 25 points to use in the judging of the finalists.

A Jury member is not allowed to allocate more than 10 points to any one vehicle, and may not vote for less than three vehicles and no more than a maximum of five vehicles.

The vehicle with the maximum number of points and the end of the Test Days is deemed the winner.

The outcome, so achieved, is final.

The name of the overall winner, the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists WesBank Car Of The Year for that year, is announced at a function hosted by WesBank.

Styled for those with a passion for power and speed; the Astra Opel OPC shares much of its exterior design with the handsome GTC in which just three dynamic lines are used to create tension in the styling and define the silhouette. The first of these styling lines is a fine crisp one that sweeps downward from the front door to the bottom of the rear fender to energize the body side. The second line encapsulates the door handle and flows to the rear to emphasize the dramatic stance of the OPC by spreading the surfaces to a fine undercut and broad shoulder. The third styling line follows the clean silhouette of the roof.

The sporty profile of the vehicle is enhanced by the incorporation of a carefully sculpted aero treatment. Front and rear bumpers, side skirts, an aerodynamic roof spoiler and two fully integrated trapezoidal shaped exhaust tail pipes. 20” wheel rims are an added statement of performance.

In Europe Opel offers a factory fitted “OPC appearance pack” to provide an even stronger presence. For the South African market this pack, with its more robust side-skirts, a two-tier rear spoiler, and body colour bar across the radiator grille, is standard equipment.

It drives with the ferocious energy of a hard core hip hop beat, ready and able to spit itself into the road’s curves as if they are straight lines. The FlexRide chassis system allows the driver to tailor fundamental handling characteristics of the Opel Astra OPC, giving you a choice of three driving modes, each one adjusting the dynamics of the shock absorber system, steering handling, and throttle response.

The standard mode provides a good all-round balance between comfort and performance for everyday motoring. A touch of a button is all that is required to engage the ‘Sport’ mode. With ‘Sport’ mode activated the suspension is stiffened up, agility is increased by a reduction in body roll, and steering action is more direct providing an overall sharper feel for the vehicle. The ultimate driving experience in the Astra OPC comes when he ‘OPC’ mode is engaged. With this mode active the steering becomes even more direct, the throttle is more responsive and the suspension setting is stiffened to deliver a maximized, no compromise handling performance.

Toyota revealed the Corolla Furia Concept at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This exciting compact sedan concept hints at the styling cues consumers can expect to see on the next-generation Corolla*. The concept represents an exterior styling study by Toyota designers, and it builds on the brand’s product development priority to develop more dramatic, expressively designed vehicles.

While very definitely just a concept, the Corolla Furia Concept is an early indicator of where compact car design will lead Toyota in the future. According to Bill Fay, Group Vice President and General Manager of the Toyota Division, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A, “it blends a heightened emphasis on dramatic design and modern elements of high technology to generate curb appeal that will surprise a lot of people.”

The Furia is designed around a theme of “Iconic Dynamism,” which uses pure and simple surface elements to create a confident, decisive and recognisable appearance appealing to more youthful consumers. It features a more provocative, dynamic interpretation of a compact sedan that displays a more stable, athletic stance with 19-inch allow wheels pushed to the vehicle’s corners with short overhangs to help emphasize its long wheelbase.

The Corolla Furia design includes a swept windshield, with a sloped roofline and pronounced fender flares, to help communicate a sense of motion even when the car is stationary. The aggressively styled front fascia, with a blacked-out grille treatment, helps highlight a pair of sculpted front LED headlamps that combine with the rear composite LED taillight assemblies to add a sense of advanced technology to the Furia’s impactful exterior. Carbon fibre accents adorn the Corolla Furia Concept’s wheel wells, rocker panels, and rear valance, which includes ornate metal exhaust outlet surrounds to add a sense of modern athleticism.

According to Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota SA Motors, “the Furia Concept offers the world a sneak preview of what people can expect from our next best-selling sedan, you could call it a high-tech take on classic Corolla values. As one of South Africa’s all-time favourite vehicles it has achieved iconic status and there is still something reassuringly Corolla in this concept.”

*The next generation Toyota Corolla will not make its South African debut in 2013.

Launched at the Paris Motor Show in 2012, Jaguar’s two-seater sports car promises to be one of the uber sexy cabriolets headed to SA. We hope; it will be available in a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine in the model line-up

2. Hyundai Velostar

With its asymmetrical door configuration, (one large door on the driver’s side and two smaller ones on the passenger side), Hyundai’s Velostar could be described as one of the most quirky looking Hatch’s we can ever expect to see on our roads!
We hope it will ;

3. Renault Clio RS

South Africa has been eagerly awaiting Renault’s fourth-generation Clio, which was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show.
We hope it will include ; Renault Sport aggressiveness, style, agile handling, turbocharged power, performance, everyday type driver/passenger comfort and sporty bucket seats.

4. Fiat Qubo

The Fiat Qubo is a useful mini-MPV. Its looks might be off putting to image conscious South Africans, but don’t be too quick to write it off.
We anticipate; it will feature clever use of space, versatility, standard features and offer a decent and capable driving experience.

5. Nissan Leaf

Finally making its way to South Africa, is the Nissan Leaf, a five-door electric hatchback. Positioned as the ‘electric car for the masses,’ overseas, it will be interesting to see how it will be received by the South African market; and what it’s price point will be.
We hope ; that Nissan will engage in an extensive communications / educational campaign about the Leaf.

6. Peugeot 208

Another much anticipated addition to Peugeot SA’s model offering, which lands hot on the (w)heels of the launch of the new Peugeot 208, in the last quarter of 2012.
We hope ; it will include a 1.6 Litre petrol engine with ‘supermini’ power/performance qualities; a 6 speed manual gearbox, compact design, energetically aggressive styling, sporty roof spoiler, chrome twin exhaust pipes, racer feel interior and layout.

7. Suzuki Splash

Making a splash onto South African shores, is Suzuki’s Splash, a 5-door city car, which has already been on the overseas market for a few years.
We think ; it will be available in at least 2 models – entry level & top-of-the-range, an that both will have an enviable list of standard features found as extras in its competitors.

8. Ford Eco Sport

Unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the Ford EcoSport is a mini-SUV, which combines small-car/city driving agility with SUV style, look and feel. We anticipate ; it will be a combination of sedately city driving with the ability to deliver a punchy performance when needed.

9. Mitsubishi Mirage

The Mirage is a 5-seater B-segment hatch, which could compete against the Nissan Micra, Ford Figo, Honda Brio, and Toyota Etios.
We anticipate ; that the Mirage will be a refreshing option for customers on the market for something adequate and compact.

10. Opel OPC

Ever since the launch of the Astra GTC, car enthusiasts have been impatiently awaiting the arrival of the OPC in South Africa, and finally the wait is all but over. A ‘racer’ car all would be proud to be seen in, the Opel OPC will live up to its reputation for exciting technological advancement and a thrilling drive experience.
We anticipate ; that the OPC will not only revive strong emotions among brand loyal customers, but also appeal to a new generation of

The boldly redesigned RAV4 features a sophisticated, dynamic and strong exterior and a spacious, high-quality interior.

When it arrives in South Africa next year, expect the trend-setting mid-size SUV to offer improved dynamic performance*, greater refinement, smart packaging, outstanding convenience technologies and even better value for money. In a significant break with RAV4 heritage, the spare tyre will be placed under the cargo floor and the new tailgate is hinged at the roof.

Internationally, the newcomer bows in with three new fuel-efficient engines*. On the menu are two four-cylinder petrol engines as well as a brand new torquey, four-cylinder common-rail diesel.

A Quickpic Media Solution

All the engines for the next-generation RAV4 have impressive fuel economy and emissions performance. The new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine is a stand-out, with combined-cycle fuel economy dipping below 6.0 litres/100km and CO2 emissions below 150g/km when mated to a manual transmission. It has a strong, flat torque curve with more than 200Nm available from just above idle and a peak well in excess of 300Nm.

They incorporate Toyota’s dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for high performance, good fuel economy, low emissions and smooth, quiet operation. All three engines are mated to six-speed manual transmissions as standard. The 2.2-litre diesel and 2.5-litre petrol engines can be specified with six-speed automatic transmissions while the 2.0-litre engine is available with Toyota’s advanced MultiDrive Sport CVT with seven-speed sequential manual mode.

A Quickpic Media Solution

New RAV4 moves the goal posts further with driver-oriented improvements including an advanced all-wheel drive system, a better driving position, improved front and rear vision, and the safety of a more rigid body and seven airbags. An array of premium features on high-grade variants includes a power-operated tailgate, blind-spot monitor, rain-sensing wipers and electro-chromatic rear-view mirror.

*Please note that details of the South African engine- and transmission line-up as well as spec levels will only be revealed closer to the launch date.

This means that the company last year sold one new vehicle every 3 seconds to a customer somewhere in the world.

Total group sales, including Hino trucks, Lexus luxury vehicles and Daihatsu, reached a new record of 9 748 000 units, which is 22.6% better than the production-interrupted 2011 and also surpasses the previous Toyota sales record of 9 367 000 units recorded in 2007.

In addition, Toyota also saw increases in production and market share in its major markets. Production increased for the first time in two years as a result of increases in virtually all regions. Exports from Japan to North America, Latin America, Asia, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa, which was severely interrupted by the March 2011 tsunami in this country, also increased dramatically which added to the overall increase.

In South Africa Toyota improved its market share to 19.4% after selling 121 276 cars and trucks in 2012. In doing so it was crowned market leader for the 33rd consecutive year.

A Quickpic Media Solution

“In 2011 we launched our new global vision, which built on Toyota’s strengths of quality, durability and reliability and put our ultimate focus on customer satisfaction. I believe that our sales success in 2012 proves that we are on target, but in the spirit of kaizen (continuous improvement) we will work hard to improve it in 2013,” says Dr Johan van Zyl, President and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors.

A Quickpic Media Solution

Toyota aims to sell 9.91 million vehicles group-wide globally in 2013, which is an improvement up 1.6% over 2012. The company believes that its exciting next generation of products, including the Toyota 86, new Auris, forthcoming RAV4 and new Lexus IS will support this goal.

Toyota South Africa has dominated the 2012 Ipsos (formerly Synovate) Automotive Quality Awards, garnering seven gold segment awards and three gold brand awards. Toyota also has the honour of producing the best model scores across the segments. (Ipsos interviewed 22 000 new vehicle owners three months after ownership. A globally recognised approach of calculating the score as Problems per 100 vehicles or PP100 was used – the vehicles with the lowest number of perceived faults rank the highest.)

The standout model ranges were the Yaris, Auris, Corolla and Hilux, all of which clinched top spots in a number of segments.

In the passenger vehicle section, the Yaris 1.0 placed first in the Entry segment. The Yaris also featured in the ultra-competitive Small Hatch segment – this time in 1.3-litre guise – where it tied for top spot with yet another Toyota model, the Auris.

Not to be outdone, the best-selling car of all time, the Corolla 1.3, scooped the Small Sedan award. Another sedan in the Toyota family that performed exceptionally well was the Lexus IS, which bagged second place in the Medium Sedan segment.

In the Top Sedan segment, the Corolla once again put in a fantastic showing: in 1.6 and 2.0 guise it added another gold award.

SUVs are now entrenched in South African automotive culture and here too, Toyota acquitted itself well with honours for the RAV4, Prado and Verso. For example in the Small Recreational Vehicle category, the RAV4 tied in third place. The Prado took home second place in the Large Recreational category, while in the Multi-purpose vehicle category, the Verso tied for third.

A Quickpic Media Solution

Toyota’s evergreen Hilux bakkie, the best-selling light commercial vehicle in the country, scooped both Double Cab segments in petrol and diesel form.

Toyota’s dominance was not limited to the vehicle segments, but also the brand category awards. Toyota’s Prospecton plant in Kwazulu-Natal was awarded the Best Local Plant Manufacturing (Passenger Vehicles). In addition, Toyota was deemed the Best Volume Passenger Car Brand Overall, an accolade it shared with Mazda. Finally, Toyota also took the award for Best One-Ton Double Cab Light Commercial Vehicle Brand Overall and Best Overall Light Commercial Vehicle Brand.

Kerry Roodt, General Manager of Marketing Communications for Toyota SA Motors, remarked that the Ipsos Awards are the latest in a long string of awards that Toyota has racked up in the past few months: “We were ranked the number one South African automotive company in The Sunday Times Top Brands Survey for 2012 as well as the world’s most valuable automotive brand in the recently published Best Global Brands 2012 by Interbrand. Then came the excellent showing in this year’s Kinsey Parts Review which saw Toyota outperform all other OEMs. This latest achievement is the proverbial cherry on top but it’s certainly not by accident that Toyota has got to this point. It’s testament to how the company has strategically been investing in all areas of business – from marketing and product development to parts and customer service.”
